Super Falcons defender Oluwatosin Demehin has revealed that fellow Nigerian international Christy Ucheibe played a role in her decision to join Portuguese champions Benfica, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Demehin completed her move to Benfica from Turkish side Galatasaray on a three-year contract, becoming the third Nigerian to join the club this summer after strikers Janet Akekoromowei and Sebastian Flourish.
The 24-year-old centre-back said she consulted Ucheibe before agreeing to join the Portuguese giants, with the midfielder speaking positively about her experience at the club.
“Before coming here, I spoke with her during the national team training camp. She told me many nice things about the club,” Demehin told BTV.
Ucheibe spent four years at Benfica before leaving the club for Paris Saint-Germain in 2025.
Demehin believes the move will provide her with an opportunity to continue developing while competing at the highest level.
“Benfica is the best club in Portugal and one of the best clubs in the world. Therefore, I know that being here, I can improve my performance,” she said.
The defender also identified hard work, discipline and determination as the qualities she brings to the pitch.
“I would describe myself as hardworking, disciplined and determined,” Demehin added.
She also announced her arrival at Benfica on X, writing, “New beginnings. New challenge. Same ambition. Honoured to begin this new chapter with SL Benfica. Grateful for the journey so far and ready for everything ahead.
“Let’s get to work. Força Benfica.”
Demehin began her career with Sunshine Queens before joining Rivers Angels, where her performances earned her a move to Europe in 2022.
She spent two years with French club Stade de Reims before joining Galatasaray in 2024.
Her move to Benfica marks the latest step in her European career and sees her follow in the footsteps of Ucheibe, who previously represented the Portuguese club.
