Nigerian jailed after raping woman, assaulting another in UK

A 30-year-old man, Olukanyinsola Odebode, has been sentenced to 12 years for raping one woman and sexually assaulting another while on bail in the United Kingdom.

Odebode, of Gainsborough Road, Cefn Golau, Tredegar, had previously been found guilty at trial of one count of rape and two counts of assault by penetration before he returned to Swansea Crown Court for sentencing.

PUNCH Metro learnt this from a news report published by Wales Online on Monday.

The offences were committed between June 2024 and September 2025. Odebode sexually assaulted and raped one woman in the Gwent Police area before he was arrested and released on bail, after which he sexually assaulted another woman in the Dyfed-Powys Police area.

According to Wales Online, prosecuting counsel, Mark Wyeth KC, told the court that Odebode “humiliated and degraded his victims” and posed a danger to women.

“There were life-altering consequences for his victims,” Wyeth said.

He also referred to a probation service report which highlighted Odebode’s lack of insight into his offending and his “complete rejection” of the jury’s findings.

The report concluded that Odebode “poses a high risk of serious harm underpinned by attitudes of entitlement.”

Wyeth also referred to the victims’ impact statements, noting that one of the women described Odebode as “very predatory”.

The court heard that seven other women had raised concerns about Odebode’s sexual behaviour with the police since 2019.

The concerns included allegations of rape, indecent exposure, sexual assault and stalking, but the matters had been investigated without resulting in convictions.

Sentencing Odebode, Judge Huw Rees said, “Based on everything I have heard about you at trial and read about you in reports, I have come to the conclusion that you are a sexually precocious person.”

The judge noted that Odebode’s behaviour had a “profound” effect on his two victims and that a probation officer had been struck by his lack of insight into his offending.

Rees added that an extended sentence was necessary to address the risk Odebode posed to the public.

Defence counsel, Matt Murphy, told the court, “It is to be hoped that while serving his sentence the defendant will develop the insight into his offending which he currently lacks.”

Odebode was sentenced to a 12-year extended sentence comprising nine years in custody followed by three years on licence.

He must serve two-thirds of the custodial term before he can apply for release, while the parole board will determine whether he is safe to be released.

The defendant, who has no previous convictions, will also remain a registered sex offender for the rest of his life.
