US Open wildcards announced with Venus Williams set to play at 46
- Two-time champion Venus Williams, 46, has been awarded a main draw singles wildcard for this year’s US Open, headlining a list of recipients that includes 2017 winner Sloane Stephens and retiring crowd favourite Gael Monfils.
- Seven of the eight main draw singles wildcards have been confirmed for both the men’s and women’s tournaments, leaving one final spot open in each draw which could accommodate a continuing comeback from Serena Williams.
- Having recently played together at the Cincinnati Open, sisters Venus and Serena Williams could also resume their doubles partnership in New York, with doubles and mixed doubles wildcards yet to be finalised.
- Three-time grand slam champion Stan Wawrinka, who is planning to retire at the end of the year, is among those in contention for the final remaining men’s singles wildcard space.
- Wimbledon boys’ champion Jordan Lee and 2014 US Open runner-up Kei Nishikori lead the list of players awarded wildcard entries into the qualifying draw.
