Richard Madeley explains how his sister saved him from choking to death
- TV presenter Richard Madeley has revealed he nearly choked to death on a piece of beef during a “lively discussion”.
- The 70-year-old told Dr Hilary Jones on Good Morning Britain that he was unable to cough after the food went “straight into” his windpipe.
- Back slaps failed to dislodge the food, with Madeley saying he “began to feel my [his] world closing in”.
- His sister, Liz Lawrence, saved his life by successfully performing the Heimlich manoeuvre as he “felt my [his] knees give way” and “went down”.
- He added: “The combination of gravity and her doing it harder than ever before dislodged the beef, got a little bit of air in and managed to cough it up, and 10 seconds later I was back in the room, but it was touch and go.”
