Indonesia earthquake kills 53 – displacing thousands on Flores Island
  • The death toll from a magnitude-7.7 earthquake that struck the Indonesian island of Flores has risen to at least 54, with officials warning the count could increase as isolated areas are reached.
  • A powerful magnitude-5.9 aftershock hit the island as residents marked Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day, following nearly 1,000 tremors recorded since Saturday.
  • At least 135 people have been injured, more than 1,300 homes damaged, and around 5,000 residents moved into temporary shelters under a 14-day state of emergency.
  • Rescue efforts and the delivery of vital aid are being severely hampered by power cuts, communication failures, and landslides blocking key roads.
  • More than 3,500 military and police personnel and 275 tonnes of aid have been deployed, with helicopters assisting communities urgently requiring food and water.
