  • Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has sharply criticized Senator Mitch McConnell and Senate leadership regarding McConnell’s extended absence from Congress following his mid-June hospitalization.
  • Beshear demanded that McConnell directly address the public via video or phone to demonstrate his capacity to serve or resign, stating that the people of Kentucky deserve accountability.
  • “I’ve received absolutely nothing, and that’s the same that the people of Kentucky have received,” Beshear told MS Now. “This is why the Senate feels broken. These guys don’t think that they have a boss when the people of Kentucky are their boss. They don’t feel like they are accountable whatsoever.”
  • McConnell was recently discharged from a rehabilitation center to continue recovering at home after suffering a fall and mild pneumonia. He vowed to continue physical therapy while staying involved in Senate business.
  • Beshear faulted Senate Majority Leader John Thune for failing to clarify whether McConnell’s seat should be declared vacant, an action that could trigger a special election in Kentucky. McConnell’s prolonged absence, along with past health incidents and the recent death of Senator Lindsey Graham, has intensified national debate over the advanced age of congressional lawmakers.
