Rory McIlroy’s remarkable fortune pales in comparison to Maverick McNealy’s position as the beneficiary of a multi-billion-dollar empire. The 30-year-old golfer, who is preparing to take part in the PGA Championship this week, is the son of entrepreneur Scott McNealy, who co-founded Sun Microsystems before offloading it for an eye-watering $7.4billion (£5.4bn).

McNealy’s privileged upbringing didn’t stop him from carving out his own journey in life. He came close to mirroring his father’s trajectory by pursuing a career in business despite being considered the most promising professional golf talent in 2016.

He opted to turn professional in 2017 and secured his maiden PGA Tour title at the RSM Classic in 2024. Aiming to pull off an upset at Aronimink Golf Club, McNealy would need to overcome the challenge of reigning champion Scottie Scheffler and two-time Masters champion McIlroy.

A triumph this weekend for the Northern Irishman would see him edge closer to Tiger Woods’ record as the highest earner in PGA Tour history, with the 15-time major earning $121m (£89m) over the course of his career.

Having banked $114m (£84m) in prize money, the 37-year-old’s profitable partnerships with brands including Nike, TaylorMade and Omega has contributed to his staggering $250m (£184m) net worth, according to CelebrityNetWorth.

A life-changing sum for the vast majority of people, yet in McNealy’s case, his share of a billion-dollar inheritance split between himself and his three brothers – totalling $1.35bn (£997m) – is more than five times greater than McIlroy’s entire fortune.

Should he pull off an extraordinary victory this week, McNealy will undoubtedly pay tribute to his wife Maya, who he has admitted plays a key role in his career. Speaking following his first PGA win in 2024, he said: “I’m the luckiest guy ever.

“Maya was chatting with me when I was maybe a little bit – being a little bit dramatic but a little bit frustrated. She said, ‘Well, if you knew you were going to win like in six weeks, would you do anything different?’

“I said, ‘Well, probably not.’ So six weeks I did get my win. No, I wouldn’t have done anything different.” Alongside his dedication to golf, the American is a passionate aviator and holds a pilot’s licence, which he has used to fly himself to a number of tournaments.

Reflecting on her husband’s twin passions for golf and flying in 2023, Maya told the PGA Tour: “[He’s] watching airplane videos any time he doesn’t have a golf club in his hand.

“I don’t know how he has the time or the mental patience to get better at both things consistently… but he’s one of the most determined people I know.” McNealy added: “I told her, ‘By the way, I’m going to start getting my pilot’s license, and she looked at me like I had three heads.'”
