The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has warned politicians, religious and traditional leaders, the media and Nigerians against hate speech, threats and divisive comments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The commission’s Executive Secretary, Tony Ojukwu, gave the warning at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday.
Ojukwu said inflammatory statements could threaten human rights, peaceful coexistence and democratic participation.
He expressed concern over comments linked to some public figures, including Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir and Senator Francis Fadahunsi, saying such remarks could deepen divisions and increase tensions.
The NHRC boss said freedom of expression was a fundamental right but could not be used as a licence to encourage violence or hatred.
“Freedom of expression does not give anyone the licence to incite violence, promote hatred, dehumanise others or deliberately provoke hostility against individuals or communities,” he said.
Ojukwu explained that the commission’s intervention was not directed at any political party, religious group, ethnic community or individual. He said its aim was to protect human dignity and support peaceful, credible and inclusive elections.
He warned that unchecked hate speech could lead to discrimination, intimidation and violence, while weakening equality and political participation.
According to him, divisive rhetoric could also contribute to political violence, communal tensions, displacement, voter intimidation and declining trust in democratic institutions.
Ojukwu urged the government and relevant agencies to identify dangerous narratives early and respond through lawful means.
He also called on political parties to strengthen their systems for stopping and punishing inflammatory statements, while urging politicians and candidates to be more responsible in their public comments.
The NHRC appealed to religious, traditional and community leaders to promote tolerance, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
It also urged security agencies to act on credible cases of incitement, threats and intimidation while respecting due process and fundamental rights.
The commission called on the media to maintain professional and ethical standards and avoid giving harmful statements unnecessary publicity without proper context and verification.
Social media users were equally advised to verify information before sharing posts that could promote hatred, hostility or violence.
Ojukwu said the NHRC would continue to monitor developments, document human rights concerns and engage stakeholders throughout the electoral period.
He urged Nigerians not to allow political differences to turn into hatred or violence, stressing the need to protect the country’s diversity, human dignity and democratic process.
