Court dismisses N200m rights suit against police in Bauchi

The Federal High Court sitting in Bauchi has dismissed a N200 million fundamental rights enforcement suit filed against the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police and the Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State Command.

The suit, marked FHC/BAU/CS/94/2025, was instituted by Dr Aliyu Sulaiman Wunti against Alhaji Abdulaziz Tijjani and five others.

The spokesman of the Bauchi State Police Command, SP Nafiu Habib, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, saying the judgment was delivered on July 24, 2026, by the Bauchi Judicial Division of the Federal High Court after 11 court sittings.

According to Habib, the applicant sought declarations that his fundamental rights to fair hearing and property had been violated, as well as perpetual injunctions against the respondents.

He also claimed N200 million in damages, comprising N50 million as compensation for the alleged demolition of his property, N100 million as general damages and N50 million as the cost of the action.

Habib said the command’s legal team defended the matter on behalf of the Nigeria Police Force and the Bauchi State Police Command.

The court held that the applicant failed to establish any breach of his fundamental rights by the respondents and consequently dismissed the suit in its entirety.

The court also awarded N1 million in costs against the applicant in favour of the respondents.

Reacting to the judgment, the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, commended the command’s legal team for what he described as professionalism, diligence and resilience throughout the proceedings.

Habib added that the judgment reaffirmed the command’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of citizens while defending officers acting within the confines of the law.
