  • The Labour-aligned think tank Compass has urged Andy Burnham to introduce a Pensions Sacrifice OBE, allowing wealthy pensioners to give up their state pension for at least three years in exchange for an honour.
  • The proposal is designed to help alleviate growing pressure on public finances and address Britain’s mounting pension crisis caused by an ageing population and triple-lock costs.
  • Compass outlined the policy as part of a report containing 100 recommendations for Mr Burnham’s first 100 days in office.
  • Additional recommendations in the report include a wealth tax of up to 10 per cent to fund universal basic income, a 50mph speed limit for fossil fuel cars, and a Danish-style national maternity fund.
  • The proposals come as Mr Burnham prepares for his first budget on 28 October, facing significant fiscal challenges including a £4.7bn defence spending shortfall.
