Sandy Alcantara sets club innings record as Marlins blank Angels

Sandy Alcantara broke the Marlins career record for innings pitched, leading host Miami to a 7-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday.

Miami broke its four-game losing streak.

Alcantara (13-6) pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and one walk, striking out eight. He got the record in the third, striking out Josh Lowe to break Ricky Nolasco’s mark with 1,226 innings at that juncture. Alcantara is already No. 1 in Marlins history for career strikeouts.

Two Marlins players who had been slumping over the past month — shortstop Otto Lopez and second baseman Xavier Edwards — led the offense. Lopez went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one walk. Edwards went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.

Angels rookie starter Walbert Urena lasted just 2 1/3 innings — the shortest outing of his young career. He allowed four runs on four hits and three walks.

Urena nearly had an early lead to work with, but the Angels — who loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the third — came up empty. Nolan Schanuel smashed a 357-foot drive to center field, but Jakob Marsee ranged to his left and caught the ball on the run in the gap, likely saving multiple runs.

It was a different story in the bottom of the inning, when Miami loaded the bases before getting two big hits. With one out, Edwards stroked a two-run double, and, after Kyle Stowers drew a walk, Lopez drove in a pair with a single to give Miami a 4-0 lead.

Miami extended its lead to 7-0 in the fifth. Marsee started the rally with a leadoff triple, and Edwards followed with an RBI single. The Marlins then added Griffin Conine’s run-scoring single and Heriberto Hernandez’s RBI double.

Alcantara nearly gave up a run in the seventh, when Moises Ballesteros drove a one-out fastball 392 feet. However, Marsee made the catch on the warning track just in front of the center-field wall.

One batter later, Alcantara’s day was done after 108 pitches, one short of his season high.
