Residents at Milton Court in Airdrie are enjoying faster, more reliable broadband and growing in confidence online thanks to a new digital inclusion initiative supported by North Lanarkshire Council.
Council leader Jim Logue and housing convener Michael McPake recently visited the high-rise complex to meet residents and students taking part in the council’s Summer Student Placement Programme, where youths have been providing digital support alongside the introduction of new broadband connectivity.
The project is helping residents make the most of technology in their everyday lives.
From learning how to use smartphones and tablets to accessing online services, staying in touch with family and understanding broadband and mobile contracts, the personalised support is giving people the confidence to get connected.
The council’s broadband pilot programme is continuing to make a real difference for tenants by helping more people get online.
More than 500 homes are now connected to the superfast 1Gbps service, with a further 680 installations planned.
Council leader Jim Logue said: “Having reliable broadband can make a real difference to people’s lives, helping them stay connected with family, access services and feel more confident online.
“It’s also fantastic to see our Summer Student Placement Programme bringing generations together, giving young people valuable experience while making a positive difference in our communities.
“Broadband helps connect households, but people connect communities.
“This project has shown that digital inclusion is about much more than installing broadband.
“Building confidence, improving digital skills and providing ongoing support are just as important in helping people make the most of being online.”
Housing convener Councillor Michael McPake added: “This is a great example of delivering improvements that benefit residents every day.
“Alongside our continued investment in council homes, projects like this are helping create connected, inclusive communities for the future.”
The sessions also helped reduce social isolation, encouraged residents to try new technology in a supportive environment and provided students with practical experience that will benefit them in their future careers.

The initiative forms part of the council’s wider commitment to improving digital inclusion while investing in communities and creating opportunities for youngsters across North Lanarkshire.
