People forced to evacuate beach after rare shark sighting
- Beachgoers in Jersey were evacuated from St Ouen’s Bay on Saturday, 1st August, following a rare shark sighting close to the shore.
- Two Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeguards spotted the approximately 3.6-metre-long dark grey shark around 40 metres from the water’s edge.
- One lifeguard reported the creature swimming directly beneath their rescue board, prompting the RNLI to red-flag the beach as a precaution.
- The beach remained closed for 45 minutes while a jet ski survey was conducted, after which no further sightings were reported.
- While the species is unknown, a surf instructor noted such an event is ‘pretty crazy’ for Jersey, with the sighting following a recent blue shark spotting in Weymouth, Dorset.
