Arsenal’s opening bid for Bruno Guimaraes has been rejected by Newcastle United.
According to Sky Sports, the Premier League champions are now in direct talks with the Magpies over a deal for their captain.
The Gunners are now discussing internally whether to go back with an improved offer.
Guimaraes is currently in Spain, where he has reported back for their pre-season camp in La Manga today.
The 28-year-old has already informed Newcastle bosses that he wants to move to Arsenal.
Newcastle want their captain to stay. The Brazilian has two years left on his deal plus a club-held option for a third.
