Myanmar’s detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi pictured meeting Red Cross official
- Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s detained leader, had her first confirmed outside contact in years on Monday, meeting a delegation from the International Federation of the Red Cross (ICRC) amid rising health concerns and calls for proof of life.
- The 81-year-old Nobel laureate, who has been in detention since the February 2021 military coup, was recently moved to house arrest, and the ICRC confirmed their delegate had the opportunity to speak with her in private.
- Photographs released by the Burmese government on Monday showed Ms Suu Kyi appearing healthy, with the ICRC stating the visit adhered to their standards for meeting people deprived of liberty.
- Her son, Kim Aris, has repeatedly demanded ‘proof of life’ and criticised the authorities for moving his mother from one secret location to another, stating she remains a ‘hostage’ despite being under house arrest.
- Ms Suu Kyi’s original 33-year prison sentence, imposed after trials criticised for lack of due process, was reduced to 18 years earlier this year, leading to her transfer from solitary confinement to house arrest.
