A bulk carrier caught fire on Sunday off the coast of Qatar after being struck by an unknown projectile, as reported by the British military.
The incident, which occurred 23 nautical miles northeast of Doha, resulted in a small fire that was extinguished with no casualties.
This attack is the latest in a series of incidents targeting vessels in the Persian Gulf, following recent hostilities including the US striking Iranian oil tankers and Iran’s Revolutionary Guard threatening retaliation against US bases or enemy ships.
Donald Trump has renewed threats of full-scale bombing if Iran does not agree to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and dismantle its nuclear programme.
The region has experienced heightened tensions since a conflict began on 28 February, leading to Iran largely blocking the vital global energy waterway and causing a surge in fuel prices, with negotiations for a ceasefire ongoing.
