Banned driver killed pensioner after crashing stolen Maserati into garden
- Fraser Garden, 55, has admitted causing the death of 74-year-old John Bell by dangerous driving after stealing a high-powered Maserati from a car showroom in Broughty Ferry on April 13.
- Garden drove the stolen vehicle at speeds exceeding 80mph through a residential area, nearly three times the 30mph limit, also jumping a red light and driving on the wrong side of the road.
- He lost control of the Maserati, clipping a kerb and striking a traffic island before ploughing into a garden where Mr Bell was working, pinning him against a house wall and causing “non-survivable” injuries.
- The court heard Garden had 90 previous convictions, including numerous motoring offences, and was disqualified from driving on the day of the incident, with the car still travelling at 34mph upon impact.
- Garden pleaded guilty to five charges, including theft of a motor vehicle and causing death by dangerous driving, and has been told by Judge Lord Braid that a “lengthy custodial sentence is inevitable” ahead of his sentencing on August 21.
