Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know Tuesday morning

1. More than 30 persons have been killed in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State. According to the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union, SOKAPU, the victims were killed during an invasion by armed men on Narido community in Kauru LGA.

2. The House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee investigating the activities of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council, PFIPC, has directed the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to produce the self-acclaimed Director-General of the organisation, Mr Adeyemi Adeniyi, by noon on Wednesday. The directive was issued on Monday during the committee’s resumed investigative hearing at the National Assembly in Abuja.

3. South Africa has reportedly failed to ratify the agreement with Nigeria, citing what Nigerian officials described as “inadequate reasons.” The Early Warning Mechanism was designed to strengthen cooperation between both countries in monitoring threats of violence, protecting citizens and addressing consular matters.

4. The Naira on Monday depreciated to N1,407 per dollar in the parallel market from N1,400 per dollar last week Friday. Similarly, the naira depreciated to N1,364 per dollar in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market,  NFEM.

5. Mr Olatunji Ifabiyi, the spokesperson for the Ondo State House of Assembly, says the Assembly will not hold plenary until the Speaker, Olamide Oladiji, resigns. Ifabiyi, in an interview on Monday in Akure, reiterated that the majority of the lawmakers were in support of the Speaker’s removal. Twenty-one of the 26 members of the Assembly had signed a resolution to impeach the Speaker if he failed to resign.

6. The Federal High Court in Abuja has okayed hearing of a suit seeking to compel President Bola Tinubu to provide maximum security to the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Party, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 general elections. The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1648/2026, is, among other reliefs, praying the court to declare that Obi has the fundamental right to life and the right to live without fear, discrimination, threat of assassination, intimidation, or any form of harassment whatsoever, as guaranteed in Section 33(1) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.

7. The House of Representatives ad hoc committee investigating the activities of the purported Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council on Monday said it had uncovered at least 29 allegedly forged official documents linked to the fake agency and its self-acclaimed Director-General, Adeniyi Adeyemi Mathew. Committee Chairman Yusuf Gagdi disclosed this during the appearance of the Accountant-General of the Federation, Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, before the panel.

8. Bori, the headquarters of Khana Local Government Area in Rivers State, has been thrown into panic after gunmen shot and killed a former Chief Security Officer of the council identified as Letam Kine on Sunday evening. It was learnt on Monday that the incident occurred along Polytechnic Road in Bori, as some alleged that the assailants may have been suspected cultists.

9. Two persons have been confirmed dead, while three others were rescued after a three-storey hostel building, known as Elite Five Star Lodge, collapsed in Amaokpala, near the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State. The building, which had about 60 rooms, caved in on Sunday night, throwing residents and passers-by into panic as an unknown number of occupants, mostly students, were trapped beneath the rubble for hours before emergency responders arrived.

10. The African Democratic Congress in Rivers State and the Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Charles Wobodo, are at loggerheads over the council’s recent ban on public gatherings, with the opposition party alleging that the directive is aimed at intimidating political opponents ahead of the 2027 general elections. The development comes amid growing security concerns in parts of Ikwerre LG, where recent incidents of killings, kidnappings and attacks on residents have heightened tension.
