Troy Jackson has secured the Democratic nomination for the US Senate in Maine, setting up a crucial contest against long-serving Republican Senator Susan Collins.
His nomination followed the withdrawal of Graham Platner, who stepped down earlier this month amid an allegation of sexual assault, which he denies.
Over 600 delegates from across Maine convened in Bangor to select Jackson as the replacement candidate, a process necessitated by Platner’s departure.
Jackson, a progressive figure and former state lawmaker, advocates for policies such as Medicare for All and the dismantling of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The outcome of this race is considered pivotal for control of the Senate, with Democrats viewing Maine as a key opportunity to flip a seat despite Collins’ fundraising advantage.
