India furious over Russian shipping attacks – but Moscow vows to carry on

Ukraine claims 116 vessels targeted in Sea of Azov over past nine days
  • Russia has stated its forces will continue to attack vessels they believe are transporting weapons for Ukraine, despite a recent incident involving Indian seafarers.
  • The declaration comes after a suspected Russian cruise missile strike on the MV Golden Leo, a cargo ship leaving Odesa, Ukraine, which reportedly killed four Indian sailors and at least six other crew members.
  • India’s foreign ministry summoned Russian envoy Vladimir Ladanov to lodge a formal protest over the deadly attack, deeming the killing of civilians “unacceptable” and condemning actions that impede freedom of navigation.
  • Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov defended the strike, claiming the vessel was transporting ammunition or military goods for the Kyiv regime, and affirmed that such strikes would persist.
  • Indian foreign minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar conveyed “strong concerns” regarding the safety of Indian seafarers to his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, highlighting the strain on relations between the two long-time allies.
