A man who died in a horror quad bike crash on the Shetland Islands has been named by police.
Peter Peterson was seriously injured in the incident, which took place on Papa Stour at around 5.30pm on Friday, July 17. The 51-year-old was rushed to Gilbert Bain Hospital, but sadly he could not be saved.
Peter played football for local side Delting FC and also represented Shetland Islands. Papa Stour is the ninth largest island on Shetland and has a population of just 15 people.
Tributes poured in for the popular council worker after news of his death spread on the island.
Maggie Sandison, chief executive at Shetland Islands Council said they had “lost an outstanding officer”. She added: “He had a passion for public service and for achieving positive outcomes for Shetland.
“He was a kind man who contributed so much to our organisation and the community. I will miss his wisdom, energy, thoughtfulness, patience and humour. My thoughts are with his family at this devastating time.”
Charles Gear commented: “So tragic, I am truly shocked and saddened to hear this. My thoughts and condolences go out to all the family and everyone who knew such a true gentleman.”
Last year, Peter re-published a book about the island written by his late dad, complete with new colour images and updated text and content. George PS Peterson first published The Coastal Place-names of Papa Stour in 1993.

Road Policing Sergeant Neil MacDonald said: “Our thoughts are with Peter’s family, and they have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time. Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of this crash.”
