World Cup: Antonio Valencia reacts as England, France players pray together after third-place match

Former Manchester United and Ecuadorian footballer, Antonio Valencia, has expressed his admiration for the sportsmanship exhibited by certain players from France and England after their 2026 FIFA World Cup third-place playoff match on Saturday, July 18.

After suffering semifinal defeats to Spain and Argentina, respectively, France and England faced off to determine who would claim the bronze medal. 

The match at Miami Stadium was an exhilarating encounter with ten goals scored, keeping fans captivated throughout.

The Three Lions surprisingly held a 4-0 lead at halftime, with the match concluding 6-4 in favor of Thomas Tuchel’s team.

Bukayo Saka notably scored a hat-trick, while Kylian Mbappe netted two goals, furthering his quest for the Golden Boot.

At the conclusion of the match, players from both teams gathered to pray, a gesture that Valencia commended. 

He took to his X account to express gratitude to both teams for their commendable performances in the 2026 tournament.

He also praised the managers and coaching staff, encouraging the players to take a well-deserved break before the upcoming season.

“Thank you England, thank you France for the tremendous World Cup you put on. Now it’s time for a well-deserved rest for all the players, the coaching staff, and each one of the assistants.

“Enjoy life and thank you for gifting us an unforgettable tournament,” Valencia posted

England’s victory marked their first podium finish at the quadrennial tournament since 1966, when they lifted the trophy.

In contrast, France concluded the tournament without a medal, having previously finished first and second in the last two editions, respectively.
